There may be a few less but the loyal followers await the first atmospherics from Trintelhaven or somewhere close by on 1395. Non-digital Amigos are lubricating the loop frame aerials up and down the country. We like to offer thanks to the folk who have worked to get to the stage of releasing a date for this event. The Big L website has its first update in a year and there are buzzings on message boards various. The OneGold story has burst on the scene and stumbled at the frequency hurdle; we also salute Mike’s effort whether successful or not.

The Reap’s mission to have a Big L subscription base is perhaps commendable – we have paid to Caroline for many years but still rarely listen to other than Mark Stafford. Of course the VIP Club, still advertised on the website, was effectively intended to be part of that subscription process. Other loosely related stations have made a splash but nothing has come close to the output of Pirate Essex or Big L at its peak.

Bas has already recounted the situation with Wight FM. Star Cheltenham sure has some strange programming, why only this morning during Mike Read’s 80s Golden Hour, three separate inserts appeared from past shows on Big L/Star including snippets from the papers and a request from Worcester Pete. Over on Wayland Community Radio yesterday, The Wombat turned in a fine performance worthy of airing on 1395 across Europe with featured artists such as the Critters and Bolland & Bolland. KCFM continues with the finest jingles and RNI continues to provide high quality Internet radio that is more than just continuous music.

There is optimism in the air again. Big L was playing loud here for at least 12 hours a day. The emergence of the Chirpy Show has restored a compelling urge not to miss something entertainingly different. Good luck with the relaunch.

On BigL-homepage it still says sky0190 within the Logo - I think this should get updated too - might be a bit confusing

Mi Amigo-Have u tried listening to Ron Coles 50`s 60`s Sunday on Mansfield 103.2 every Sunday-5-7pm? Its worthy of a mention too- cause it !dares" to be broadcast on a local independent station. For how much longer I wonder, each week I listen.

Is this the news we've been waiting for ? Until now I have not heard any tests on 1395, but I'm always on the lookout.

Feed via sattelite ? Implies that a (new) dish was installed at the site. Maybe it's time to take a peak at Trintelhaven.

Time to stick my backup Bigl-bumpersticker on the new car ?

There is no feed via satellite, because Big L no longer has a satellite licence. The audio will be taken from an Internet stream at the communications tower in Lelystad, and then sent by radio link to the transmittter site at Trintelhaven. There is no mains supply or Internet service onsite.

Wouldn't it be much cheaper to do it with a dongle attached to a laptop and a flat-rate ?
Or is the bandwith too small then to produce a good sound ?
What is the advantage to do it the way (in my eyes expensive..) you said Andy ?

If it's only going to AM anyway, the bandwidth would be more than ample, I would have thought!

Yep, 128 Mb/s should be much more than enough. KPN-dongle subscription should do the trick, KPN claim nationwide coverage.

I am not an engineer, or a businessman. I am a journalist. I just report the facts, at least as they are told to me. Originally, I was told that indeed they would use a laptop and a dongle - the problem is, that won't work at the transmitter site as there is no Internet, wi-fi or otherwise. I don't see why it should be expensive to do it the way they are apparently going to do it - I understand there is no licence fee required for the radio link. But your question is better directed to Eric van Willegen, whom you can contact via his website at [link]
